16th Century Italian Bench

This 16th-century Italian walnut bench, a gift to Bowdoin College by Susan Dwight Bliss, sat anonymously for 60 years in a public hall on campus. In 2008 it was rescued by Art professor, Susan Wegner to be part of her exhibition, "Beauty and Duty: The Art and Business of Renaissance Marriage," at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

East Point Conservation directed the disassembly and transport of the bench and performed conservation to stabilize wood elements. The surface was carefully cleaned to remove decades of accumulated grime and to preserve the existing finish.
